Artist Jake Wood brings his exhibition to the Gateshead gallery for an ‘immersive bodybuilding queer experience’
Kent-based artist Jake Wood brings his Muscle Mary exhibition to Vane, Gateshead. In it, he explores the intersections between bodybuilding and queerness. Drawing on a culture that is concerned with de-bunking the ideas of fitness, work and exercise, he explores this by integrating his own use of the gym and physicality into his performances using tongue-in-cheek humour and slapstick comical gestures.
Wood considers his performative work inherently intrusive and appears at different locations, each with varying space and environments, and draws the general public in to become unwitting participants captured on video.
Muscle Mary will preview on Friday 3rd March (5-8pm) and will be exhibiting from Saturday 4th March to Saturday 1st April, with a live durational performance at the opening of the exhibition.
