The sound and video art exhibition takes place on 26th February and focuses on Sunderland’s relationship with Makina, the Spanish subgenre of dance music
On Saturday 26th February FROM HEAVEN takes place at the Athenaeum Gallery in Sunderland for one day only, between 11am-5pm. Developed as part of Sound and Music’s Composer/Curator 2022 commission, the show looks at Sunderland’s relationship with the Spanish subgenre of hardcore techno Makina, which is known for its speed, euphoric melodies and hardcore stabs. It remixes this underground culture that has been nurtured in the North East since the early 2000’s and demonstrates how it is connected to worlds outside of the club space.
FROM HEAVEN features Sunderland filmmaker Daniel Appleby, whose new work Pure Ecstasy re-examines a VHS of the iconic New Monkey on New Year’s Eve in 2001, as well as local soundscape artist Ruth Hughes presenting her new work Only you/we were meant to be, with an hour long rework of DJ KAYTEE BEE’s mix.
Then from 6pm Bella Canta Ladies Choir performs three new compositions by Ruth Hughes inspired by classic North East Makina and Hardcore tracks and informed by early 12th Century Gregorian chant.
Entry for the 11am to 5pm show is free. The Bella Canta Ladies Choir performance is also free and places can be booked here.
