Newcastle’s not-for-profit gallery space, Slugtown, will be hosting Flying Inside Your Own Body, a solo show by Leeds-based artist Rosie Vohra.
Rosie is a multidisciplinary artist based in Leeds and studied at the The Royal Drawing School and Leeds Arts University and is an active member of Assembly House Studios. In this exhibition, she explores the split nature of cultural identity, feminism, metamorphosis, the conversation between craft and artistic traditions and the connection between folklore and domestic life.
Vohra is interested in metamorphosis depicted in literature and how it gives her a feeling of space opening up, akin to the nature of collage. Through the use of collage, Vohra tears away at existing paintings, drawings, clothes and scraps and reassembles these to contain multiplicities that become tangled together. Collage functions as a malleable platform for her cultural and psychological exploration, unburdened by clear cut boundaries.
The exhibition takes place at 44 Wretham Place, Newcastle from 10th September to 8th October, with a preview taking place on Friday 9 September (6-9pm)
