City of Dreams is a 10 year strategy supported by 50 organisations (in arts, culture, heritage, science, community, voluntary and statutory sectors) to get under 25s from Newcastle and Gateshead to engage in creative activity and give them a strong voice in decisions about the city. On Friday 8th and Saturday 9th November (5.30pm) they, with support from Newcastle University, as part of their mission to honour the social justice legacy of Frederik Douglass, present Our City Our Truth: the real story of being young on Tyneside to Sage, Gateshead – an immersive experience in film, sound and performance that sheds light on the issues that really matter to young people on Tyneside.

City of Dreams has reached out to 11,000 children this past year and as executive producer for City Of Dreams, Ben Dickenson, points out, “The standout issues of concern are discrimination, gender inequality and poverty.”  These issues are explored in a 75 minute experience involving film, music, performance, spoken word and headphones that will keep your feet and mind working throughout.

Performing at the event will be popular Tyneside actor and singer Kema Kay, rising local stars Wambui Hardcastle and Papi Kanu, and the Streetwise Crew rap ensemble. But it’s not just the performers who reflect the youth of the city, the show has been made by a team of young producers- Aaron Martin, Mirander De-la-Haye, Nicholas Hind and Wambui Hardcastle – giving them a voice as well as invaluable experience for working in the creative industry. Nicholas adds:This is the next event in City of Dreams’ series offering a stage for young people to share their experiences. I’m thrilled to be producing this alongside other young people, and to help make NewcastleGateshead become the best place to be young.”
