Reliably informed

If you mention the fact that London’s Young Romance have already supported the likes of Mystery Jets, Summer Camp and Slow Club on tour, then you’ll probably form a distinct mental image of what they’re like. Perhaps it’s a band filled with pop gems, with a penchant for the golden era of 60s surf or perhaps the more electro and glittering style of the 80s. And if you guessed that, well… You’d be completely right. No curveballs here. And they’re a boy-girl duo too? Surely we’ve heard this one somewhere before…

That’s not to say that Young Romance are tedious or derivative though. Yes, they draw on some obvious influences but the pair can hold their own against their more established contemporaries by introducing some grungy aesthetics into the mix (their love of fuzz and riffs reminiscent of the Jesus and Mary Chain being just one example). After all, without something to set them apart the pair would never have been picked to play at New York’s Pop Fest (not bad for an emerging band). If you look beyond what Claire and Paolo appear to be, you’ll find something to cherish here.

Young Romance play at Ku Bar, Stockton on Friday 11th September.
