Tales of romance combined with comedy usually send me running for the hills, as they’re usually just a bit too schmaltzy and usually rotate around a thoroughly predictable storyline: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back, some hilarity ensues in-between if you’re lucky. Rinse and repeat. As a result, a rom-com with a distinctive twist is always welcome.

You, Me and Everything Else, which is currently a work in progress to be completed in September by Carmisado Club, is a sci-fi comedy romance that asks questions about our place in the universe and what music we’d send into space (if a combination of David Bowie’s Starman and Elton John’s Rocket Man wasn’t too cheesy). It also just happens to be the story of a man and a woman looking out into space and finding love together. But that’s just a frame for what happens to be a thought-provoking and entertaining piece of storytelling asking some surprisingly deep philosophical questions about our place in the universe. It also happens to be quite funny, too. If you’re skeptical about all things romantic comedy then prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

You, Me and Everything Else comes to Northern Stage on Saturday 26th June.
