Reliably informed

I’ve been a fan of jazz as long as I can remember and I’ve played piano since I was six (I’m no good mind). I also have an unhealthy obsession with Japan. I am, therefore, the perfect target audience for Yoko Miura’s performance at the Lit & Phil on September 23rd. This isn’t jazz as we know it though, this is improvised free jazz. I don’t know a lot about Yoko, but a scout through YouTube tells me this could be anything from very confusing to wonderfully enlightening. The very nature of free jazz is that you don’t know what you will get, but the magnificent surroundings of the Lit & Phil will add a definite atmosphere to the haunting and at times exuberant performance that Ms Miura will create.

Charlie Collins, as her accompaniment, will bring the appearance of Charles Darwin but more importantly some percussive basis from which Yoko can rebound. A sense of space and anticipation can be expected in this most cerebral of genres. For those of you willing to try something new, Yoko Miura is a world famous figure and the best possible point from which to start your post-graduate musical education.

Yoko Miura & Charlie Collins play at the Lit & Phil, Newcastle on Wednesday 23rd September.
