You can find Withered Hand, especially on his 2009 debut Good News, somewhere between folk and indie with titillating flecks of bluegrass. Expect Dan Willson at his forthcoming gig at Bobik’s on Thursday 7th April to show off his melodic, strangulated vocals which add a depth and awkwardness to the contradictory upbeat tracks, which are by turns self-deprecating, self-loathing and melancholy, hung around pensive/tricky situational parodies.

Whether he’s performing songs from his debut or revisiting tracks from the recent Ten Years EP to sound symphonic and ramshackle all at the same time.

Songs from 2011’s New Gods take the artist on a move towards maturity, discussing the birth of a child and death of a friend, the things that sober the youth in all of us. No matter his oeuvre, audiences can anticipate accustomed and articulate well-finished folk and indie songs full of the quirks and personality associated with the UK’s DIY scene. Folk are in for a right treat.

Withered Hand performs at Bobik’s, Newcastle on Thursday 7th April.
