The growing movement for gender equality in the music industry has clearly not gone unnoticed in the North East. The support for female musicians seems to be growing at an exponential rate, and is gathering momentum here in the North too.
Popular Ouseburn venue Cobalt Studios is set to join the march with an exciting program of live shows called Violets, which will feature some of the most talented performers the region has to offer. The week of all-female programming takes place at the venue from Tuesday 27th February until Sunday 4th March. “Violets stands for the opposite of ‘Shrinking Violet’ and will bring some of the strongest, most charismatic and talented female musicians to the stage and decks at Cobalt,” say venue directors Kathryn Hodgkinson and Mark Collett.
From soulful singer-songwriter Martha Hill, to flouro-punk DJ outfit The Candy Vortex, the Violets program presents a menu of events to suit all tastes. Other confirmed acts include Kathryn Williams, Harleighblu, Jennifer Walton, Ceitidh Mac, Me Lost Me [I Lost My], Charismatic Megafauna, The Lone Taxidermist, and many others. The diversity of the line-up is astounding, and brings some really interesting and experimental artists to the foreground.
And that’s not all. This marks the start of a wider program of activity called WeCreate, as Cobalt join forces with talent development behemoth Generator. With the support of industry pioneers Brighter Sound and The Roundhouse, they will be contributing support to female musicians from all angles. Keep an eye out for their fabulous workshops, artist residencies, industry sessions, networking events and showcase opportunities.
