If you were around in the mid to late nineties then there were some points where it seemed like you just couldn’t escape from the balls-tripping house anthem that was Born Slippy. Used famously in the soundtrack to Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, its popularity propelled the duo behind Underworld into the limelight. A year or so beforehand, though, the duo had released their debut album dubdubnobass (which didn’t include their biggest hit) to critical acclaim. And some serious head-scratching. At the time, Underworld’s take on house and dance was unlike anything anyone had heard before; not completely club-friendly but not chilled enough for the after-party either.

Twenty years on, dubdubnobass’s then-unique brand of EDM has been emulated, but never quite fully replicated. So to celebrate, the duo are back on tour playing their debut album in full to their fans. It’s a unique chance for fans of the band, both new and old, to experience their legendary live show but also to hear some of the tracks that get neglected in favour of their later output. And you never know, they might toss in Born Slippy at the end for old times’ sake.

Underworld play at the Sage Gateshead on Saturday 14th March.
