What do you do when you fear things are getting stale? Following a stellar run with The Drones (including genuine album of the decade contender I See Seaweed), main songwriter Gareth Liddiard and core bandmate Fiona Kitschin were looking for a break from their band’s past and a fresher direction. Recruiting Lauren Hammell and Erica Dunn to round out the line-up, the result of this year-zero reboot was Tropical Fuck Storm: a band every bit as fierce, ridiculous and downright joyous as their name would have you hope.

Their debut A Laughing Death In Meatspace was an auspicious calling card, with Liddiard drawing on the same rich vein of toxic inspiration that fuelled his astonishing lyrics with The Drones to create a set of fever dream end-of-days monologues that matched the edge-of-your-pants psych rock sprawl his bandmates conjured up. Always feeling on the verge of slipping into chaos but resolving itself with surreal, inspired guitar work and uncanny rhythms, it was the sound of a band impressively removed from guitar-bass-drums cliché and ready to breathe vital new life into the format.

If lead single The Planet of Straw Men is any indication, their upcoming second album looks set to up the ante yet further – and their first ever UK tour, stopping at Newcastle’s Cobalt Studios on Saturday 18th May, is going to be one to tell the grandkids about over the irradiated, post-apocalyptic kitchen table or garbage bin.
