Reliably informed

Now nearing their tenth year, your latest favourite boy-girl rock duo you’ve never heard of, Tigers Jaw (whose apostrophe-less name presumably refers to several tigers talking, rather than a cat’s mandible) have grown from crunchy, droning garage rock on début single Spirit Desire, through impenetrable Beck-esque mumblecore on 2006’s Belongs To The Dead, to a triumphant blossoming on last year’s Spin LP.  Fans of The Lemonheads definitely need to apply on the dotted line – perhaps more insistent than Dando’s troupe, neverthess Tigers Jaw apply an accessible sheen to the staple alt. rock format, which has been shuffling feet for years and they come dangerously close to being radio-friendly at times.

Supporting them at their headline gig at The Cluny on Friday 13th April, we move from feline to canine, as Slaughter Beach, Dog is the side-project of Jake Ewald, half of Modern Baseball, which finds him swapping college punk stylings for more circumspect acoustic-based material with superbly engaging results.  Already on his second album, 2017’s Birdie is chock-full of observational ditties which, while perhaps unlikely to change the world, reveal a songwriter comfortable with his introspective side. As if that wasn’t enough, Worriers showcase the spiky vocals of Brooklyn polymath Lauren Denitzio. Good value doesn’t begin to describe it.
