2015 was a busy time for John Flansburgh and his band They Might Be Giants. Releasing their acclaimed seventeenth album Glean, they also set themselves the task of releasing one track a week for the whole of that year, and it seems that creativity and the band’s astonishing work ethic show no signs of slowing anytime soon.

Speaking to John in late November about his band’s latest album and its influences, he admits that New York City, the place where the duo had met and still call home, is close to his heart. “The energy of New York City is very real, right from the start it had a big influence on us,” he said. Nowadays, he’s not so sure, perhaps it’s more subtle; they’ve been there a long time and he’s more accustomed to the strength of the coffee for one.

The song that broke them, Birdhouse In Your Soul, was a worldwide smash. However, managing to avoid the pile of unwanted one-hit wonders, success sat just comfortably with them both. Together they welcomed the opportunities that came with it, and admit they may not still be here without it.

Today, the band find themselves a five-piece, giving them more ideas both in the studio and live, check them out at Newcastle’s Riverside on Thursday 28th January.
