The Wedding Present headline Middlesbrough’s Base Camp on Saturday 14th December, armed with a collection of tunes which brought about no less than 18 UK Top 40 singles.

The band’s initial run from their formation in 1985 to split in 1997 brought much critical acclaim, with their debut album George Best consistently ranking as one of the genres finest. It found its home within NME’s 500 greatest albums of all time, but the band never let their standards drop, and the result is a stacked back catalogue that puts them in good stead for their latest headline tour.

They reformed in 2004, and have been on an impressive run since which has done much to rekindle the initial spark. This is all the more impressive when you consider that lead vocalist David Gedge is the only ever-present band member; he’s led the group through a range of styles and personnel but their most recent album, 2016’s Going Going, is some of the band’s best work. It’s certainly experimental, but the quality shines through, as expected from a man that John Peel described as having “has written some of the best love songs of the rock ‘n’ roll era.” High praise indeed.
