Attention all anarchists, philosophers, and humble tea-drinkers! This month will see the long-awaited return of the Social Lectures – Sunderland’s premier programme of intellectually stimulating, theme-driven talks – to the city’s very own Pop Recs LTD. This time, however, the events in question have an inescapably punky tinge, with Martha’s Naomi Griffin and Pauline Murray (of Penetration & The Invisible Girls fame) acting as hosts.

First up on Wednesday 16th August is No Future, a discussion that aims to explore the effects of Britain’s oppressive class system on youth culture and unemployment. Here, Pauline Murray will also be examining the subsequent growth of the punk movement – a scene of which she (needless to say) has had a fair bit of personal involvement. Pop Recs’ doors will then be flung open once more on Sunday 30th August, as Naomi Griffin presents Duty Free Technology – a talk on the links between modern tech and the ‘business’ side of punk-rock.

Both events will be followed by a stimulating workshop in response to the topics discussed, with each attendee actively encouraged to get involved. What’s more, all ticket holders will also receive a complimentary drink of their choice – it is hosted by the highly hospitable folks at Pop Recs, after all!
