Reliably informed

“Get busy living, or get busy dying”, the unlikely quote from the mild mannered Andy Dufresne as he and Red discuss freedom from incarceration. The film adaption of Stephen King’s short story is full of lines uttered by film-lovers worldwide, and now we have the opportunity to relive them in a new medium. Bill Kenwright has breathed fresh life into the classic movie and it will be tunnelling its way into the historic Theatre Royal.

Set in 1940s America, The Shawshank Redemption tells the tale of a friendship between Andy, a banker controversially jailed for the brutal murder of his wife and her lover and Red, the prison wheeler dealer, the pair form an alliance that gives both of them hope in their inescapable situation. Originally Red was intended to be a redhead (stands to reason), but Morgan Freeman was deemed an opportunity too good to miss and he and Tim Robbins played opposite each other brilliantly to give us one of the greatest double acts of all time.

Casualty’s Ian Kelsey (Andy) and Patrick Robinson (Red) have the unenviable job of recreating that intangible frisson, they certainly have the look, as well as the pedigree, and by all accounts pull it off magnificently. If you loved the film, you’ll adore the stage show. If you didn’t love the film, you are a danger to the successful continuation of the species.

The Shawshank Redemption comes to the Theatre Royal, Newcastle from Monday 19th October until Saturday 24th October.
