The North. That fascinating place we all know of yet have never visited. That bleak place, with its harsh landscape, strange creatures and unknown dangers. This is the stuff of dreams and even nightmares. Think beyond the Wall in Game of Thrones and then go somewhere else entirely.

The North is the whimsical story of a young man’s journey, searching for meaning in an unpredictable environment. John has no memory of who he is or where he comes from, he finds himself lost in this place with its own sense of time and space, where getting lost is the norm. With only two eccentric Northerners for company, John discovers that letting go is the only way to survive.

Co-commissioned by Tramway and The Place, The North is the latest thought-provoking and highly imaginative work from Joan Cleville Dance, performed at Newcastle’s Dance City on Saturday 11th November, which blends elements from dance, physical theatre and puppetry. The music is haunting; the silence even more so. The set is a dream landscape of unlikely props and fanciful costume, and it’s all there to create the landscape of the mind.
