Their seventh studio album opens in an exceptionally upbeat manner with the infectious Play Money and whilst they sustain this early excitement throughout, the record evolves and takes a darker path through the likes of We’ve Been Here Before and the eerily haunting Juke.
However, it’s Clockwise that truly stands out as the vocals blend almost seamlessly into one another, creating such beautiful harmonies. Achieving coherence in an album is a lost art form, but something that The New Pornographers have strived to achieve on Whiteout Conditions. As the record reaches its crescendo, this wild ride culminates with the vibrant and passionate Avalanche Alley, and when it finishes it leaves you longing for more. An excellent album that flows superbly throughout.
