Cult filmmaker Todd Haynes is the sort of one-off cinematic talents that doesn’t come along too often. Dazzling films and a real pioneer of New Queer Cinema, the director is receiving a spotlight with a showcase of films at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle throughout April and May.

Haynes’ back catalogue is a small but beautiful collection of melodramas which are filled with strong characters pushing back against the confines of society. First up it’s period drama Far From Heaven on Sunday 22nd April, then sci-fi drama Poison intercuts three mesmerising stories on Sunday 29th April, with iconic glam rock movie Velvet Goldmine on Thursday 3rd May and his Early Works are showcased on Sunday 6th May. You can also see Bod Dylan inspired musical drama I’m Not There on Wednesday 9th May, the much-acclaimed Carol on Sunday 13th May and quirky drama Safe on Wednesday 16th May. His new mystery drama film Wonderstruck runs throughout April too, so if you’ve not yet sampled this magnificent creative talent, now’s your chance, and if you have, what better way to marvel at the glorious art he produces for the screen.

New Luminaries: Todd Haynes is at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle throughout April and May.
