A new twist on Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest is coming to a screen near you. This live stream performance is produced by up and coming director, Adam Kinneen and features students from Newcastle University Theatre Society. It’s performed and filmed at the Sunderland Empire and will raise funds for Acting for Others, a national charity which gives those working in the entertainment industry much needed financial and emotional support.

The play is one of Wilde’s best known and most loved works but this production comes with a twist. The playwright himself will be introduced as a character at three intervals during the performance which is written by Adam Kinneen and draws on Wilde’s letters and words. They offer an unseen insight into Wilde’s life and tracks his rise to stardom, from the successes of The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest, to his heartbreaking downfall following revelations about his sexuality.

To demonstrate the suffering Covid-19 has caused the arts and entertainment industry, the whole performance will be against the backdrop of 2,00 empty seats in the grandiose setting of The Empire, In Sunderland.

The performance will be broadcast from 2nd -16th July and tickets available here, with ticket holders having access to it throughout this period.
