Spring and summer are set to be very exciting times for Theatre Royal, as a host of phenomenal shows come to our region. Two upcoming stand-outs for April arrive in the form of gripping play The Father from Monday 18th until Saturday 23rd April. While Nederlands Dans Theater 2 bring a mix of dance and Van Morrison on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th April.

The Father sees illustrious actor Kenneth Cranham plunge the audience into the experience of dementia, as he takes on the role of eighty year old Andre. It’s a challenging piece which follows a man starting to wonder if he’s losing control. After dazzling audiences so far, it’s a play which really maximises just how thought-provoking theatre can be.

I New Then, by Swedish choreographer Johan Inger, comes from Nederlands Dans Theater 2, which sees four girls and five boys bring to life songs by Van Morrison. Fresh, fun and optimistic, it’s seeing the individuality of this group vivaciously come to life that has earned it such acclaim so far. They also bring a UK Premiere of Romanian choreographer Edward Clug’s Mutual Comfort, which emphasizes personal experience through dance; and award-winning choreographer Hans van Manen’s Solo, a fast-paced seven minute ballet set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Violin Partita. It all forms part of a captivating show from one of the world’s most celebrated dance companies.

Theatre Royal, Newcastle hosts The Father from Monday 18th until Saturday 23rd April, and Nederlands Dans Theater 2 on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th April.
