After a two-year hiatus, Durham-based band The Castells have returned with a brand new sound and some brand new music. To celebrate, they’re playing a show alongside Birmingham-based band Cold Ocean Lies on Thursday 12th March.

In the band’s own words, “We’ve found our sound with the new songs and couldn’t be happier with the direction the new music is going in.” It’s certainly a pretty different, much more defined and robust sonic experience; Shake The Reigns and Caught Up On The Tracks both show off a grungier, more garage-rock approach to the band.Caught Up On The Tracks is a full-on onslaught of heavy riffs, with a rhythmically powerhouse performance from drummer Danny, while Shake The Reigns sees the band adopting a loud-quiet-loud approaching and showing off a more nuanced side to their ballsy rock. The band are giving both tracks away for nothing on their Soundcloud page, so there’s no excuse not to get a taste of what The Castells version two will sound like.

While they might give some of their older tunes an airing at Think Tank, their new direction is certainly attention-grabbing and heralds a new and truly exciting era for the band.

The Castells play at The Head of Steam, Newcastle with Cold Ocean Lies on Thursday 12th March.

You can listen to their new tracks and download them for free on The Castells’ Soundcloud page.
