Prolific North East singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist The ÆTHER returns this month with his second album ÆTHEREAL, released on his own Revelation of the Method label. Having gained considerable plaudits for his first self-titled release, the focus this time is on his own experimentation, with The ÆTHER writing, performing and producing the release himself. The result is a sprightlier record than his debut, evidenced on album opener Deep In Love, which conjures the likes of Mark Ronson and Daft Punk in its lively guitar licks; Miracle’s gradually building energy will ensure it’s a dancefloor filler; while the interestingly titled Urgh is a minimal banger.

With this release The ÆTHER continues to explore electronic dance genres; with a cinematic approach and an ethereal atmosphere, ÆTHEREAL marks an evolution of the artist’s sound from the frail electronica evidenced on his debut release to an almost dazzling exhilaration. The influence of the likes of James Blake, Portishead and Prince are easy to identify, while the vocals are by turns breathy and compulsive, upbeat and dynamic.

“Lyrics explore the questions of meaning and identity, the struggle to maintain a healthy personal private world in a world that seems to demand we make the personal public and create an identity that ‘fits’.” The artist explains. “ÆTHEREAL is an optimistic record, underscored with hope, resilience and a love of life.

The ÆTHER performs at Surfcafe Tynemouth on Saturday 13th April.
