The brutalist art rockers release their new EP this month

Breaking in Little Buildings’ new home on Stepney Bank, Newcastle power-trio TANKENGINE celebrate the release of their second EP with an eye-catching launch show on Friday 6th March.
One of the region’s more anomalous guitar outfits, the self-described brutalist art-rockers (whose members have form from the likes of Yourcodenameis:milo, Tomahawks For Targets and Little Moscow, among others) offer a raw and intoxicating sonic blitz, channelling everything from early US college rock and post-hardcore to the noisier end of the UK’s post-punk spectrum. This melange scales new heights on TANKENGINE TANKENGINE, a co-release through local labels Cruel Nature and Sapien Records. Spanning the length and breadth of their palette, its five numbers display a thrilling, face-melting dynamism, veering from the steaming, almost motorik rancour of opener Mambo to the quiet-loud structures and frazzled distortion found on eight-minute centrepiece Swagger.
On a bill tailored for riff fiends, the launch show sees them joined by two other incendiary trios in bruising, Fugazi-evoking firestarters Ballpeen and DIY stalwarts FRET!, whose letter to the ‘80s underground takes in noise, surf, hardcore punk and everything besides – not bad for £5. Come along, grab yourself a cassette and prepare your ears for a royal battering.
