It would have taken a rock of spectacular size for you to hide under to miss Michael Omari’s remarkable year so far, but for the benefit of any visiting martians: having spent several years building a reputation as one of grime’s most vital voices through his Wicked Skengman freestyle series as well as stunning calling-card singles like Know Me From and Shut Up, Stormzy has since taken the charts by storm with the runaway success of his debut album Gang Signs & Prayer.

Mixing established fan favourites and new blasts of punchline-heavy bravado – truly, never has a man ever wielded the word dickhead with such potency and innate comic timing – with excursions into contemplative R&B and ever quasi-Christian rock, Gang Signs & Prayers has been that rare critical and commercial smash that plays to both the underground and the crossover audience with equal skill.

Having managed to charm just about the entire country in the process of establishing his chart dominance, his appearance at Newcastle’s O2 Academy on Thursday 6th April has gone from ‘hot ticket’ to ‘generation-defining moment’ in the blink of an eye. For those in attendance, it’ll be a special evening with one of this country’s finest young talents in a room he’s already outgrown.
