Reliably informed

I’m not going to lie, I’d never heard of Stonefield before I was asked to write this preview of their Wandering Oak gig coming up at The Cluny on Sunday 8th July. Not only are they playing on the Sabbath, there’s a huge chunk of the much better Sabbath in their sound.

Signed to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s label, Aussie behemoths Stonefield are literally a band of sisters who, if early videos on YouTube are anything to go by, have been rocking out together since they were in nappies. Their early sound seems to have been on the Southern rock end of things, but on their latest album, Far From Earth, it appears they’ve now fully embraced the Psych.

There’s riffs, atmospheric keyboards and, at times, a haunting folk lilt to their vocal harmonies that gives Stonefield a vibe that wouldn’t be too out of place standing in a field of, er, stones, smoking illicit substances and praising the sunrise. I like Stonefield so much that I’ve clicked ‘Going’ on the Facebook event and actually meant it for once.

If that’s not enough, there is Gallic support on the night from la premier garage rockers au Francais, Slift, and Tyneside’s pre-eminent nihilistic fuzz creeps, Cheap Lunch.
