Given the quality of their two albums – No Separation and last year’s wonderful Hands Together – and accounts of just how good a live act they are, it’s surprising that New York’s Spirit Family Reunion aren’t a much bigger deal this side of the ocean. They call what they do ‘open door gospel’ which reflects the manner in which they try to get the audience involved in their music, in a mass outbreak of singing and clapping and stomping. Musically, their charmingly ramshackle bluegrass-inflected country folk has a lot in common with regular tour mates Hurray For The Riff Raff and spin-off outfit The Deslondes as well as big name bands like The Felice Brothers and of course The Band, who’s influence still looms large over any band making this kind of old, weird American music.

As ever, thanks are due to Jumpin’ Hot Club who are bringing Spirit Family Reunion to the The Cluny 2 on Sunday 21st August, with support from Shipcote & Friends, the Jumpin’ Hot main man’s own band, who know a thing or two about being charmingly ramshackle, and Virginian band Twain.

Spirit Family Reunion, Twain and Shipcote & Friends play The Cluny 2, Newcastle on Sunday 21st August.
