From Friday 15th December until Sunday 22nd April, Gateshead’s BALTIC welcomes the first ever solo exhibition from Sofia Stevi in a public institution. Living and working between Athens and London, Stevi has deployed different media over the years to realise her artistic ideas, including bookbinding, painting and writing.

Drawing inspiration from literature, philosophy and the everyday – from the writings of Victorian poet Christina Rossetti to images from Instagram – Stevi’s work is irresistibly attractive and relatable, dealing with deep psychological issues such as repressed desire, social oppression and the female experience in a patriarchal society, in what promises to be an emotional and highly relevant exhibit.

Gravity and perspective are largely lost as Stevi leads us through unrestricted space and time. Moving between the real and imaginary, the lines between living and dreaming become blurred. This deeply personal presentation at BALTIC brings together recent paintings and drawings, alongside a body of new work made especially for the exhibition. Expect sexual symbols, psychedelic patterns and intensely emotional use of colour. The artist herself will be on hand to discuss her exhibition, giving an insight into her processes and inspirations, on Friday 15th December.
