Anonymous techno indie metal act Sleep Token play in Newcastle
It’s a little bit spooky when you see performers so adamant to hide their identity from the public – you can’t help but worry what else they might be hiding. For anonymous techno indie metal act Sleep Token, however, it’s what they do choose to share which gives me shivers.
Fronted by a figure known only as ‘Vessel’, they apparently worship an entity known as ‘Sleep’. Somehow, I don’t think they mean your standard afternoon nap. (Although, if they do, count me on board with this oddball pseudo-religion.) Peculiar practices aside, I have to admit their sound is quite exceptional; I anticipated a track called Drag Me Under to be one of their heavier offerings, but instead I was almost lulled to sleep with an eerie piano ballad and ghostly vocals. On the other hand, the anthemic heavy metal guitar lines of The Offering snapped me awake.
Am I going to pretend I have any idea what’s going on with this band? Absolutely not. Am I intrigued to catch their live show at Newcastle’s Riverside on Wednesday 29th January? Absolutely… Heck, I think I’ve been indoctrinated into a cult.
