Back in 2014, we gave Simon Taylor & The Sundowners single of the month for their song Hot Love – a mellow, easy listening trip of warm, funky guitars and silky keys. The band’s follow up EP, New York City Girl, refuses to let the frosty temperatures get in the way of a distinct love of idyllic, summery nostalgia.

The opening title track is a jazzy, upbeat ride through the romantic sites of the Big Apple, whilst Les Reus De Paris plays like an old fashioned waltz – a love story with accompanying strings, accordion and interchanging vocalists between two besotted protagonists. Hollywood Smile is led by the smooth tones of vocalists Ivel Goverda and the lyrical observations of Simon Taylor himself, before the tracks slides into a funk-laced groove on the outro.

The band’s new material is set for release on Friday 4th December and will be rounded off with a launch show at Newcastle’s Mining Institute on the same evening. Support will come from AlterCosmos, a Newcastle-based quartet who fuse elements of trip hop, Catalan folk and acid jazz.

If the winter weather is already getting you down, this gig is certain to be a suitable antidote.

Simon Taylor & The Sundowners play the Mining Institute, Newcastle on Friday 4th December.
