Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past year, you can’t have failed to notice the surge in activity in North East hip-hop. Sunderland is a particular hotbed at the moment and Friday 23rd February will see a hip-hop and grime showcase at Independent in Sunderland featuring some of the very best purveyors from the region.

Tees Grime Family bring a seven-strong crew up the A19 to show off their skills. Hard-working and without craving any approval from elsewhere, their don’t-give-a-fuck attitude and single-mindedness makes them a really exciting proposition. Sunderland’s Listaa made a real statement with last year’s PiSC3S album and one listen to Talk Atha Town from that record should tell you that this guy has the potential to be massive, if it’s realised.

90BRO is a DJ, producer and rapper who does so much that it’s difficult to believe that he ever manages to sleep. A true talent and, hopefully, there’ll be some tracks on display from his upcoming Cybersoul record that is already being hyped as an absolute game-changer.

Other artists on the night include La Familia 4, E-Mence, B-Type, Max Gavins, Cyberbyte and NE Dons.
