Artistic Director Charlotte Vincent and her brilliant, cross-generational ensemble Vincent Dance Theatre have been ‘moving people and making them think’ since 1994. In their latest work, SHUT DOWN, which is performed at Dance City in Newcastle on Thursday 7th March, feminist choreographer Charlotte Vincent directs an all-male cast in investigating the contradictions, challenges, difficulties and joys of being a man in the modern world, and presenting the myriad identities that go along with masculinity.

In a post-Trump, #metoo, gender non-binary world, what does it mean to be a man in contemporary society? What language can men today use to express their internal and external struggles, their aggression and anxiety?

In Vincent Dance Theatre’s SHUT DOWN, street dance, contemporary dance, spoken word, rap and real-life testimony collide to explore what it’s like living in the world we’ve created for young people. Challenging conventional values in dance and gender politics, this extraordinary cast of men and boys, whose experiences punctuate the show, create a timely, darkly comic and highly charged work of dance theatre which manages to be both political and poetic.
