There’s always something exciting about a gig that doubles up as an album launch party, hearing songs from an album ready to be released into the world, there’s a palpable excitement in the air, and a glowing sense of pride eminating from those on stage. There aren’t going to be many more warm and welcoming album launches than that of Shipcote And Friends, whose folk influenced brand of Geordie swing now has a new full album, Old Is Cool Again; its release is celebrated with a show at Cluny 2 on Friday 22nd January.

Songs like Yes Yes Blues capture all of what Shipcote And Friends do best, a slick double bass the driving force of a song where swing meets blues, with folksy elements very welcome underneath a delightfully smooth voice. Devil Song takes you back even further, to some underground speakeasy in mid 20th Century America, though with the Geordie overtones, it reminds you where you are, at just the right moments. There are lots of influences evident on this very polished selection of songs, blended together well for an album that’s a very pleasurable listen.

With a history associated with Jumpin’ Hot Club, a club known for putting on amazing live shows over a long period of time, hearing these songs live will be a perfect introduction to them; before listening to the album right through from start to finish. With support on the night coming from fellow folk influenced singer-songwriter Brendan Croker, this is a show guaranteed to be full of engaging songs and a heartwarming atmosphere.

Shipcote And Friends’ Album launch is at Cluny 2, Newcastle on Friday 22nd January.
