With its commendable aim of bringing together communities, individuals and professionals to celebrate the quality and diversity of music in the Tees Valley, a new element incorporating bands and songwriters will bring more music to this year’s Shine Festival at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Saturday 11th May.

In previous years the focus has often been on traditional and classical practices, offering valuable opportunities for young people to gain insight and knowledge and perform at a world-class venue in front of appreciative audiences. This year the remit has been widened to include other genres, with Teesside’s thriving DIY scene encouraged to join in. The performance line-up from 5pm will include Darlington’s up and coming alt. indie band Neon Waves, lo-fi trio Sonder Minds, female-fronted funk popsters The Lulas, pretty alt. folkers GF Bruce Band, rapper Leddie MC, songwriters Charlea B and Tobias Halford and folk and country artist John Stainthorp.

A panel event from 2pm will feature Henry Carden (Quiet Crown Management), Simon Shaw (KU Promotions), John Esplen (Wipe Out Music Publishing), Rianne Thompson (BBC Introducing/Amazing Radio) and yours truly, to help provide food for thought for emerging artists, covering subjects including music publishing, printed press, radio, management and gig booking – ideal for those looking to get a foot in the door.
