It’s a rare type of musician who can take a traditional instrument like the African kora and turn it into something truly magical for the modern day. Senegalese musician Seckou Keita is just one of those players. A childhood prodigy, Keita was born into a line of griots (praise singers) and kings, with both a royal and creative background. He’s graced the world of music since 1996, playing his 22-stringed West African harp to audiences across the world and collaboratively for the likes of Youssou N’Dour and Neil Finn.

Keita’s last two albums Miro and The Silimbo Passage hit No.1 in the European world music charts and has earned him a slew of accolades, arguably making him the most influential kora player on the planet. In the live arena, just watching Keita ply his trade is a pleasure to watch, as he weaves tales and makes the most beautiful music with his instrument of choice. It’s not often you get to be in the presence of such musical greatness, so take the opportunity to see one of the greatest players on the world stage.

Seckou Keita comes to Sage Gateshead on Sunday 25th October.
