The clue’s in the name: Savages. Expect wild. Expect primitive. Expect fierce.

In this new full-length work Savages, LO-GIUDICE DANCE, an internationally touring contemporary dance theatre company based here in Newcastle upon Tyne, presents one man’s journey into a dark fantasy world of love, loss and sacrifice. A wild, romantic journey that fuses brutal ferocity, ancient sagas, mystical ceremony and human lust into a compelling, passionate tale of survival.

It’s a savage world out there, and yet there remains a strange beauty, a sensual and spiritual experience and a sense of the divine connecting with the human soul.

Anthony Lo-Giudice’s raw, physical choreography draws inspiration from the movement of our ancestors. It’s primal and animalistic, conjuring forth a nameless beast lurking in the folklore, history and soil of the North. The heart-pounding soundtrack by Einar Selvik of Nordic pagan band Wardruna blends barbarian battle cries and hauntingly beautiful voices.

Lo-Giudice’s sculptured and poetic choreography combines with artist Hector de Gregorio’s Couture costuming to create a visual representation of the stages of catharsis in trans-hallucinogenic devotional ritual fertility and sacrifice dances. The preparation. The event itself. The aftermath. How each of these affect the body: Death, New life and Renewal. If you wish to witness life in all its glory – and it’s savage splendour – head down to Dance City on Saturday 11th March.

Savages is at Dance City, Newcastle on Saturday 11th March.
