You can always rely on the five-day Enchanted Parks event in Gateshead’s Saltwell Park to get you in the festive spirit. Taking place from Wednesday 10th until Sunday 14th December, the spectacular Victorian park is transformed into an out-of-this-world wonderland, courtesy of some of the best light and sound artists around.

The ‘out-of-this-world’ aspect has been taken extremely literally this time around as the narrative revolves around Estella, a young girl from Saltwell Towers who we are told had a fascination with the stars that shone brightly above her. Will her wishes come true and her dreams of travelling into space soon become a reality? We certainly hope so. Don’t be put off by the fairytale set-up however; the narrative is simply a clever vehicle for all these astonishing installations to come together in one quirky and highly unconventional setting. The celestial bodies Estella so admired will be swooping down, so we will be able to get a closer look of them here on terra firma.

In previous years, an impressive range of national and international AV artists have flocked to the region to take part. This year’s theme – inspired by the stars and night sky above us – fits in perfectly with the dark and other-worldly nights that make this time of year so atmospheric, and provides plenty of scope for breathtaking light and sound installations, as well as stunning pyrotechnics and live performances. Forget the tacky shop window displays; this is when our anticipation for Christmas properly hits the stratosphere.
