Royal Northern Sinfonia are marking an impressive milestone in unique style this month, as they celebrate their 60th anniversary with a series of concerts with a twist. The UK’s only full-time chamber orchestra, RNS are a truly global success story, having toured the world and worked with world-class singers and musicians, both as guests and as part of the orchestra itself. Currently led by music director Lars Vogt, the orchestra are known for breaking musical boundaries, and their collaborations with the likes of Ben Folds and John Grant have enticed new audiences to witness their prowess.

The RNS Rocks show, at Sage Gateshead on Friday 21st September, will see the orchestra teaming up with three of the North East’s own rock music mavericks, who will have their songs arranged especially for Royal Northern Sinfonia. Tyneside’s irrepressible rockers Maximo Park will offer up their effervescent and often politically charged pop music for the RNS treatment; Sunderland’s Field Music, themselves no strangers to the addition of an orchestra, having expanded their sound through their own Open Here Orchestra on their most recent album, will also benefit. Replacing the previously booked Du Blonde will be Martha left-field pop multi-instrumentalist Martha Hill.
