Known to friends and family as Ryan Lee West but to us as Rival Consoles, this Leicester-born electronic producer has carved out a distinct niche of his own for his blend of intricate techno, ambient drift and modern classical sensibilities. Although compared to artists like Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm, West’s work as Rival Consoles focuses on an organic approach to synthesiser work and a tension between home and public listening that gives it a unique atmosphere.

His latest album Persona arrived on the influential Erased Tapes label earlier this year, finding West pushing both the room-filling techno and ambient strands of his work in further directions whilst maintaining the focus on songcraft and unexpected, post-industrial sonic textures of past albums like Howl.

Now touring the UK in support of Persona, Rival Consoles lands at The Cluny 2 on Thursday 7th June – a surprisingly intimate choice of venue for an artist with the reputation and influence of West. Appearing alongside him on the evening is local producer/performer Son of the Bear, whose sporadic live appearances have revealed an artist working in a strain of tasteful, genre-agnostic dance familiar to fans of Four Tet and Jamie XX.
