In 2006, a tribute to Richard Thompson was released entitled Beat The Retreat, which featured covers by indie rock royalty like REM, Bob Mould and Dinosaur Jr as well as more mainstream acts like Bonnie Raitt and Los Lobos.  It spoke volumes with regard to the influence that the English singer songwriter and renowned guitarist has had over a career that turns fifty years old this year, dating back to his emergence as a member of folk heroes Fairport Convention.

To celebrate Thompson’s landmark anniversary, he has released Acoustic Classics II, a second collection of his most revered tracks that follows on from a first volume released in 2014.  Rolling Stone called him “A perennial dark-horse contender for the title of greatest living rock guitarist”, and you can be sure he’ll be performing a set full of hits like Wall Of Death, I Misunderstood and Shoot Out The Lights when he brings his live show to Sage Gateshead on Wednesday 18th October.  London’s BBC Folk Award winning duo Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker will be providing the support, so it’s a great chance to catch the best of folk past, present and future at what is sure to be one of Sage Gateshead’s most magical nights.
