Troy Donald Jamerson – Y’all know the name? The man better known as Pharoahe Monch brings a little slice of Queens to the Ouseburn Valley on Monday 8th August – expect it to get rowdy.

The man once known as one half of Organised Konfusion, who evolved into a rapper with some of the most sought after bars in the late 90’s, guesting on tracks and contributing to the now heralded Rawkus mixtapes before releasing Godzilla-sized solo tune Simon Says upon the world in the summer of ’99 is sure to bring the ruckus.

For the uninitiated Monch offers a lot more than his most successful club-banger. Two concept albums since have established Monch as a real player in the grey area between braggadocios hip-hop and the more conscious material oft associated with Talib Kweli (who features on Wu-Tang referencing D.R.E.A.M. from Monch’s last release – 2014’s PTSD).

With his style developing into a far less obviously aggressive one, 2007’s Desire has more in common with a Prince record than Public Enemy, Monch has illustrated to the world he’s more than a one-track pony but don’t be fooled. Just as all the greatest hip-hop MC’s are Monch is still angry and his flow is still one of the best in the game.

Expect a bold, ambitious look into Pharoahe Monch’s back catalogue from late 90’s through to the present day. If you holdin’ up the wall then you missin’ the point.

Pharoahe Monch is at The Cluny, Newcastle on Monday 8th August.
