Peg Powler present a collection of funny, vibrant cartoons from the Bristolian
For Bristol-based cartoonist Nuala C Murphy, pop culture and modern urban sights go hand in hand. Her edgy and vibrant images sum up contemporary life within the city in humorous and intelligent ways. DIY arts organisation Peg Powler first came across Murphy’s work through zines and small press comics (as most great underground art is found nowadays). After seeing her artistic individuality and wry sense of humour, curators AJ and Rebecca felt that they just had to bring Murphy’s work to Stockton.
Persuading Murphy to display her work at the Arc is a move of genius, lending some distinct colour to its contemporary walls. Featuring artworks that focus on minutiae – from bubble butts and hairdos to grannies and rappers – Murphy’s cartoons are adult and observational, culminating in a bold and bright artistic style that really captures the imagination. This unusual yet engaging exhibition will is typically off the wall from Peg Powler, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Nuala C Murphy’s exhibition comes to Arc, Stockton from Thursday 1st until Saturday 31st October.
