Following on from their successful livestream introducing event in April, North East rappers Kema Kay and Kay Greyson continue to showcase the best young artists the region has to offer with a second event.

Performing as part of a live stream on the Friday 11th June, Kema and Kay will showcase the best of North East HipHop talent, as well as performing some of their own hit tracks, whilst artist Rob Rez does a live art work.

Both Kema and Kay are known to North East audiences for their clever lyrics and their energetic performances and over the past year they have been working with regional arts promotion charity Northern Roots to engage with young diverse artists across the city.

Kay tells us more about this project that has been popular with young, aspiring hip-hop and grime talent…

“We were aware there were loads of young kids working in the bedrooms making tracks, isolated due to lockdown and with schools and youth clubs all closed at the time we put a shout out on social media inviting young people to get in touch. We were overwhelmed with the response with over 30 young people making contact. We have supported young people to write their own music, make up their own raps. The quality has been so strong that we booked out local studio time and employed a local videographer GG and the young people have now recorded their own work and produced their own videos. We have secured funding from Youth Music and the Community Foundation.”

Throughout this month visual artist Rob Rez has exhibited his paintings of Kema, Kay and young performers from the hip hop scene at Gosforth Civic Theatre. Rob will be undertaking a live painting of proceedings capturing the spirit of the show live and direct.

The event is free and takes place at 8pm and is available via the Northern Roots Facebook Page and Gosforth Civic Centre’s YouTube Channel.
