Murray A Lightburn is best known for being the songwriter in Canadian indie stalwarts The Dears, a band whose album No Cities Left really captured the imagination of this writer when it came out in 2004. Perhaps unfairly labeled as Canadian Anglophiles, The Dears ploughed the same furrow as Arcade Fire in creating evocative, emotive chamber pop.

Now onto his second solo record, Lightburn’s gig at Newcastle’s Think Tank? on Saturday 27th April provides a rare opportunity to see him perform in an intimate venue. His new release, Hear Me Out, is a heart-on-sleeve meets classic songwriting record; a deeply compelling listen which traverse genres creating warm, full-bodied recordings. Lightburn is unabashed in his expressions of love and commitment to his family, though themes of redemption also appear on the record. The intimate surroundings of his Newcastle gig will provide an opportunity to fully appreciate this tremendous songwriter.
