Taking time over the evolution of a new project has proved to be time well spent for musical siblings Jonny and Dominic Noble, who teamed up with drummer Michael Snowball last year to quietly launch Moonlight Crusade. Those familiar with the Nobles’ previous bands – Bernaccia and Kobadelta respectively – will be unsurprised to learn that their new project has psych rock elements threaded through their sound. Previous demo, the slow-burning No Denying, is filled with swirling guitars and a thrilling psychedelic heaviness.

Having spent a year fleshing their sound out, and adding Jordan Robson on bass and Jack Reed on keys, the group have honed a muscular sound which draws on broader elements. Their first single proper, released this month, is an altogether different approach from their first recorded output. The hook-laden, groove-filled Disco UFO is an anthemic, funky epic on which Jonny channels his inner Nick Cave with a sultry drawl, while the chorus’ falsetto mantra is catchy as hell. Recorded with Chris McManus at Blank Studios, Moonlight Crusade’s sound has been teased into a multifaceted fusion of soul, psych and rock, making for an enticing prospect indeed.

The band play a headline show at Think Tank?, Newcastle on Friday 22nd June, with support from Palma Louca and The Noise & The Naïve.
