Psychedelia can quite often drift between two poles: either it extends itself out into hypnotic wig-outs or reaches such an intensity that it takes you to another plane. Wooden Shijps’ Eric ‘Ripley’ Johnson and partner Sanae Yamada fall distinctly into the latter camp. Under the name of Moon Duo, their physically and mentally invigorating take on psych veers into even more cosmic territory than Eric’s main band.

By Moon Duo’s own admission, last year’s Shadow Of The Sun aims for the highest apex of psychedelia, a point that can cause a prolonged shift in consciousness. With its often extended instrumentals with cyclical riffs but deeply melodic keyboards, it certainly transports the listener into distant realms. The album also saw the introduction of drummer John Jeffery, who lent raw, organic intensity to their lofty sound. In recent times Jeffrey has joined the band in the live arena, so there’s even more of a gut-punch to their consistently mesmerising sets. Even if you’ve heard the band’s sole live LP, Live At Ravenna, brace yourself for something more primal at Stockton’s Georgian Theatre, where they’ll play on Wednesday 8th June.
