Reliably informed

Remarkably, Melt-Banana have been melting faces and twisting minds for a quarter of a century, never troubling the charts or becoming household names, but earning and maintaining a reputation as a fearsome, thrilling live outfit and innovative, wayward recording act across a dozen or so albums (plus numerous singles, compilations and other releases.)

Essentially a core duo of vocalist Yasuko Onuki and guitarist Ichirou Agata, with a rotating cast of drummers, bassists and collaborators (including a who’s who of noise icons like Merzbow, KK Null, Napalm Death and several of Mike Patton’s outfits), Melt-Banana blend perky pop melodies with speeding thrash metal and noise rock to create an ultra-energetic, hyperactive sound that’s all their own.

Although they haven’t released an album since 2013’s Fetch, they’re embarking on a short tour of the UK this month culminating with a couple of appearances at this year’s Supersonic Festival, including an afternoon Kids Gig, which is ought to be as absolutely batshit as you could hope. Having played the region a couple of times in recent years, including shows at The Star & Shadow Cinema and Cluny 2, on Friday 9th June they return to bring their sugar-rush noise to The Cluny itself. I urge you to be there.
