Having received plaudits aplenty for their recent All The Love (Nobody Wants) EP, Newcastle quartet Mechanical Mouse Organ gear up for another release this month, with follow-up Emily Rains due on 22nd June.

Continuing the band’s adept way with a pop hook, yet steeped in an undeniable classic rock sensibility, the new EP also shows a punkier and more experimental side to the band’s sound. The title track is a perfect example of rowdy rock ‘n’ roll, with garagy riffs and a rousing chorus; while High Horse fizzes with pissed off rancour, launching an attack on bigotry and Brexit-era racism, the lively drums offer a staccato emphasis which carries the scuzzy guitar lines as Darryl Todd’s lyrics implore the ignorant to “shut your mouth”. Closing track Tunnel Vision continues Todd’s tirade (“You dipshit / You halfwit / Your train wreck / Your shame”), and shows a heavier side to the band’s oeuvre, peppered with alternating time signatures and a curious Pixies-esque flamenco flavour, it’s a delicious slab of paranoia that begs to be put on repeat.

The band give their EP an official launch at The Cluny 2, Newcastle on Saturday 23rd June, where they’ll be joined by ‘world punk’ rascals The Smokin’ Coconuts, plus a solo set from MMO’s own Darryl Todd.
