With debut album From Kinshasa released last month, it’s exciting times for Mbongwana Star, as the newly formed 7-piece band from the Democratic Republic of Congo take their sound out on tour, and they play Sage Gateshead on Saturday 11th June.

The band features Coco Ngabali and Theo Nzonza of Staff Benda Bilili, hailing from the shanty-villages of Kinshasa, Africa’s third largest city, where bands, music and musical instruments are recycled. Two of the founding musician’s Coco Ngambali and Theo Nzonza worked with maverick Parisian musician and hip-hop and electro producer Doctor L, leading to a sound full of energy and bursting with percussion, guitars and captivating voices, fusing traditional Congolese rhythms with post-punk bass and electronics. Support comes in the form of Estère who plays/records a mixture of bass, synth, drums, guitar, vocal harmonies, keyboard, whistles, claps, kazoo, desk tapping and anything else that might take her fancy in crafting some evocative melodies.
