Reliably informed

Over the past few years, Brit-folk is a market that’s become a little oversaturated. With the rise of Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and Noah & The Whale in particular, British folk music became all the rage for at least a few years, and was continually heard on festival stages and radio stations across the country. Mawkin, though, can say that they got there first.

Since forming in 2002, Mawkin’s blistering fusion of rock, blues and folk have made them pioneers of a trend that exploded in the late noughties. It was a blend that would earn them three nominations at the BBC Folk Awards and earn them a legion of fans before Marcus Mumford had even picked up a banjo. Always looking to embrace contemporary styles while still maintaining the traditions of folk music from across the globe, Mawkin’s new album combines wild, soaring and emotional melodies and some rousing, rebellious songs. Plus, they know how to have a good time. If you thought that Brit-folk might be waning a bit, go see Mawkin: nobody does it better and they’ll restore your faith in the genre.

Mawkin play at the Cumberland Arms, Newcastle on Thursday 21st May.
